You have an idea.
Maybe you’ve had it for years.
You keep thinking about the story you want to tell, the experience you want to share, or the book you know is somewhere inside you.
But every time you sit down to write, the same question comes up:
Where do I even begin?
The good news is, you don’t need to have the whole book figured out before you write the first page.
You just need a place to start.
Start With the Idea That Won’t Leave You Alone
What keeps coming back to you?
A character?
A story?
Something that happened to you?
A question you can’t stop thinking about?
Start there.
Don’t worry yet about whether it’s a bestseller or whether anyone will want to read it.
Instead, pay attention to the idea that keeps calling you back.
That may be where your book begins.
Don’t Try to Write the Whole Book at Once
One of the biggest mistakes new writers make is thinking about the entire book before they’ve written a single page.
Instead, start with something smaller.
Thinking about the entire book can feel overwhelming.
So, ask yourself:
What is the one thing I want to write today?
It could be a scene.
A memory.
A conversation.
A character.
A single chapter.
You don’t have to know exactly where it will lead.
In fact, writing is often a process of discovering the story while you’re telling it.
Give Yourself Permission to Write Badly
Most importantly, your first draft doesn’t have to be good.
It just has to exist.
You can edit a page.
You can rewrite a paragraph.
You can change a character.
But you can’t improve something that hasn’t been written.
For that reason, don’t wait until you have the perfect words.
Write the words you have today.
Then come back and make them better.
What If You Still Don’t Know Where to Begin?
That’s okay too.
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t writing.
It’s figuring out what you actually want to say.
You may have an idea but no direction.
You may have too many ideas and not know which one to follow.
Or you may know you have a book inside you but need someone to help you find the path through it.
That’s where having the right support can make a difference.
